November Pop-Up: Liminal Spaces
The inspiration for my 3rd monthly pop-up exhibit and sale is “Liminal Spaces” which will take place on Saturday, Nov 21st!
Last month, my daughter gave birth to her first child and this experience inspired my pop-up theme for November. The “Liminal Spaces Collection” includes glass and photography pieces that evoke images and experiences I associate with liminal spaces: thresholds, transitions, thin spaces, portals, in-between times, and the process of transformation and growth.
My experience of liminal spaces has primarily been through a repeating life process that I think of as “Order – Disorder – Reorder.”
ORDER
During order, life moves along in a familiar, predictable way. I understand and feel comfortable with the everyday rules and expectations that guide me. Then, suddenly, something significant changes—bidden or unbidden, wonderful or heartbreaking—and my familiar Order is thrown to the wind.
DISORDER
During disorder, I find that the old rules that faithfully guided me in the past no longer seem to work. In the difficult days of this new disorder, I enter a liminal space of unknowing. I am often unsure what to do or how to make decisions. I feel a little—or sometimes a lot—lost.
REORDER
Fortunately, during disorder there are days when I can hold on to hope. My past experiences remind me that, eventually, a new order—Reorder—will begin to take shape and become a new predictable normal and a new understanding of how to navigate my changed circumstances.
To calm my sense of overwhelm and slow myself down during these times of disorder, I turn to a few specific practices: regularly spending time in nature, mindfully creating beauty through glass and photography, reflectively reading my favorite spiritual masters, and consistently connecting with other people.
What I have discovered through these liminal transitions is that these practices help me pay closer attention to my heart when making decisions. Over time, I find that a clearer, stronger sense of love begins to shape the everyday rules and expectations that emerge in my new reorder, which will eventually feel familiar to me and will become order.
For me, this is both the challenge and the gift of liminal space: the uncertainty of being between what was and what will be, and the possibility of transformation and growth along the way.
I hope I will get to see you at “Liminal Spaces” on Saturday, November 21st! Along with this new themed collection, I will also be offering a variety of winter holiday items and pieces from October's “Deep Space, Our Home” collection.
